Brhat trayi have extensively covered masura under ahara dravyas and it is identified with Ervum lens Linn. There are two varieties viz., pita and pandu varieties. The later variety is known as mangalya.
Botanical description – A small erect pubescent herb; 15-75 cm high; leaves compound; leaflets narrow, 1n 4-6 pairs; rachis as long as peduncle; flowers red, rose, violet or while, in single or 2-3 on a slender axillary peduncle; pods smoth oblong or rhomboidal, compressed, 1-1.5 cm long; seeds 2, smooth, lenticular, compressed, pale-pinkish buff to ighantu red. Flowering during December-January and fruiting during March-April. It is a cold weather crop, cultivated throughout India.
Part used – seeds.
Uses – Seed paste or poultice applied to foul and indolent ulcers; its soup is used as nutrient etc.
Chemical constituents – Indolyl acrylic acid, lenticin, tricetin, trans-ferulic acid, proanthocyanidins, kaempferol etc.
