Like other members of asta varga, jivaka is also a controversial herb. Bhavamisra quoted vidarikanda as the substitute for jivaka as well as for rsabhaka. Thakur Balvant Singhji ighantu that M. wallichii is beig used as rsabhaka by the vaids.
Botanical description – A short stemmed terrestrial herb, 30 cm high, pseudo bulb ath the base, fibrous roots; leaves simple 3-4, alternate, ovate or lanceolate, acute, 5-15 cm long; flowers minute, in terminal racemes, yellowish green with purple tinge.
Part used – green swollen stem base covered with brown scales.
Uses – Tonic, alterative, nutritious, aphrodisiac, antitussive etc.
