In the nighantu literature, sevya is the term used as synonym for usira. Simbitika and sincitika are the names used to denote sevya in caraka nighantu (Su.27/139) and susruta Nighantu (Su.46/139, 149). However, these names are not traceable from astanga hrdaya. Probably, sevya of vagbjata is simbitaka of earlier times. In the nighantus we come across the description of sevya in almost all the texts. Sevya is famous as apple (Pyrus mallus Linn.) .
Botanical description – This is a medium sized tree and round, ranges from 20-30 feet (6-9 meters) in height; twigs – Slightly wooly with thorn-like tips; bark – Scaly and somewhat peeling; dark brown or gray in color; leaves – Small, ovate, scalloped leaves with evenly spaced, usually more rounded teeth; 1-4 inches (2-10 centimeters) long. Underside of the leaf tends to be a lighter color, usually gray or a fuzzy white; flower – April through June, whitish-pink, 5-petaled, fragrant flowers appear. Each flower produces a yellowish; fruit in the fall at least an inch (2½ cm) in diameter;

Uses –
Fruits are used for making jelly or cold drink or even eaten raw.
Chemical constituents – They are sour in taste compared to orchard apples. They contain a large amount of pectin.
