Ksira-kakoli is one of the astavarga dravyas, prescribed extensively by brhat trayi. All the nighantus praised it as jivaniya and balya group. Bhavamisra quoted asvagandha as its substitute. Though the botanical source remains controversial, R. procera roots are being used as ksira-kakoli. Probably, the younger plant root is used as kakoli while the older plant root is used as ksira-kakoli. During a study tour in 1986, auther observed a ighantu of using the one year old and more than two year old plant as the source of kakoli and ksirakakoli respectively at Yogi Pharmacy, Haridwar.
