Caraka has not mentioned this plant. Sushruta described it under Saka varga (S.S.Su.46) while Vœgha¢a quoted it as Kumbhayµoni (A.H.Ut.13). Sushruta high-lighted the utility of Agastya in NaktŒndhya (night-blindness). All the nighantus have described it. In Rµaja Nighantu four varieties of Agastya are mentioned viz., Sveta, PIta, NIla & Rakta.
Botanical Description – This a small tree growing upto 10m bearing big white or red flowers. It is avaitable wildly as well as cultivated in most parts of India.
Major Chemical Constituents– Methyl oleanolate in flowers; Kaempferol, (+) leucocyanidin etc. from seeds.
Part Used– Leaf, flower, whole plant.
Dosage– Leaf juice 10-20 ml; decoction 50-100 ml, flower 5-10 g.
Research–
(1) Crude extract caused CNS depression in mice, hypotensive effects in cats, histamine-like stimulation in isolated guinea pig ileum which was blocked by mepyramice (Chem. Abstr. 1984, 100, 45274 s).
(2) Aqueous extract of flowers caused haemolysis of human and sheep erythrocytes (Fitoterapia 1985,56,188).
