Panasa is decribed under Phala varga in the Brihat Trayi texts. It is also quoted by the Nighantu writers as nutritions and tonic.
Botanical Description – It is a ever green tree reaching a ighan of about 20 m. It is found in many parts of India.
Major Chemical Constituents– β-carotene, aurantiamide, morin, dihydromorin, artocarpin, isoartocarpin, artocarpesin etc.
Part Used– Root bark, leaf, fruit, latex.
Dosage– Decoction 50-100 ml.
Research–
The presence of an acetylcholine-like substance in the seeds was demonstrated by various biological tests. Apart from the presence of acetylcholine there was evidence of the presence of another active substance which had positive inotropic and chronotropic effects on the frog’s heart (Lal & Rao, 1964).
