Thakur Balwant Singhji was of the opinion that Ipomoea petaloidea Chois may be the source of syama trivrt.
However, syama trivrt appears to be a morphological variation of O. turpethum. Author noticed that the samples collected from the north Indian region are pale coloured compared to dark coloured roots from south India. The botanically identified samples of O. turpethum, both black and white were administered to ten subjects suffering from functional constipation on change over basis with a gap of fifteen days in between. Surprisingly, the black sample produced effective relief compared to white sample. This study is only an ighantu one and needs further evaluation on randomized, control-basis.
