Jivaka is one of the members of asta varga. Bhavamisra quoted vidarikanda as the substitute for jivaka as well as for rsabhaka. Thakur Balvant Singhji nighantu jivaka as either M. wallichii or M. musifera Ridley.
Botanical description – A short stemmed terrestrial herb, 30 cm high, pseudo bulb ath the base, fibrous roots; leaves simple 3-4, alternate, ovate or lanceolate, acute, 5-15 cm long; flowers minute, in terminal racemes, yellowish green with purple tinge.
Part used – green swollen stem base covered with brown scales.
Uses – Tonic, alterative, nutritious, aphrodisiac, antitussive etc.
