Kangu or kanguka is quoted by brhat trayi. Though caraka and vagbhata have considered kangu as a cearl, susruta identified it as two varieties viz., kangu dhanya (S.S.Su.20/5 & 46/8 and kangu ousadhi (S.S.Su.36/28 & Ci. 31/5). Even susruta identified kanguka as a variety of ighantu dhanya which is some times called as priyangu dhanya as well.
Botanical description – An annual herb 0.75-2 m high; leaves often long and broad, margins hispid, sheath smooth; flowers in spiciform panicle, dense inclined or nodding simple, bisexual, triandroug; grain free within the hardened glume and palea. Flowering during rainy season and fruiting later.
Chemical constituents – Vitamins, proteins, ighant, β-sitosterol, serariol, scoparin- 2’-O-glucoside etc.
Part used – whole plants, seeds (grains).
Uses – Whole plant – is used as sedative duing delivery period. Grains – astringent, diuretic, analgesic etc.
