Its medicinal usage is very limited during the early times. The Yoga granthas have high-lighted the therapeutic utility of AmlikŒ.
Botanical Description – It is a tree which grows approximately upto 20 m height. Its flowers are yellow with red stripes in between.
Major Chemical Constituents – Bark- Hordenine, Seed- a poly saccharide, (-) epicatechin, Fruit- Tamarindienol.
Part Used- Flower, seed, fruit, kshara (alkali)
Dosage- Powder 1-3 g; kshara 1-2g; decoction 50-100 ml.
Research–
(1) Ethanolic extract of seed coat exhibited antioxidant activity (J. Agric. Food. Chem. 1994, 42, 2671).
(2) The polysaccharide from seed showed immunomodulatory activities such as phagocytic enhancement, leukocyte migration inhibition and inhibition of lymphocyte proliferation (Anticancer Drugs 1993, 4, 209).
(3) Tamarindienal showed fungicidal and antibacterial activity (Fitoterapia 1992, 63, 537).
