All the Brihat Trayi texts described Sarja. Though we come across names like Laghu Sarja, Maha Sarja, Nadi Sarja and Sarjaka in the ancient texts, only V. indica is considered as Sarja. Sarja Niryasa is mainly used in various fromulations and individually as well. Two trees viz., Terminalia tomentosa W. & A. (meepee) and Shorea robusta (mepe&ced) are used by tribals of U.P. and Bihar as Sarja (Thakur Balvant Singh, p. 424).
Botanical Description – It is a hunge tree with white flowers and found in the evergreen forests of western India and Karnataka.
Major Chemical Constituents– Oleoresin contains essen. Oil, (+) camphena, α & β pinene, limonene, chamazulene etc.
Part Used– Bark, gum
Dosage– Bark decoction 50-100 ml, gum powder 1-3 g.
Research–
(1) V. indica exhibited significant antiulcerogenic activity against induced gastric ulcers in rats (Biswas et al., 1993).
(2) In clinical study on anti-obesity effect of V. indica and Lac (N=20) showed significant reduction in the weight of the patients treated (dose: 3g twice a day)- (Rahman & Ashraf, 1994).
