Gavedhuka is mentioned by brhat trayi but, susruta quoted it at once. K. C. Chunekarji reported that it is used as food and its decoction acts as diuretic.
Botanical description – A tall branched, stout, annual grass with broad flat long leaves; leaves scabrous, acuminate;s pikes androgynous, male spikelets at the upper part of the inflorescence, 2-flowered, pinkish or brownish; lower glumes usually many-nerved, boradly elliptic or obovate; uper florates barren; fruits large, shining, pear-shaped being enclosed by hard polished bract. Flowering and fruiting during September-January.
Chemical constituents – Seeds / grains – arginine, histidine, leucine, lysine, tyrosine, coicin, glutamic acid etc. Root – 4(2H)-benzoxazine-3-one, (2H)-benzoxazine-3-one etc.
Part used – seeds, root.
Uses – Seeds are known to be diuretic and tonic. Root is useful in menstrual disorders.
