It is quoted by Caraka under ‘Phala varga’ (C.S.Su.27). Sushruta (S.S.Ci.11&18) and Vagbhata (A.H.Ci.3 & Ut.37) have also mentioned it. Some identify it with Gymonsporia spinosa (Forsk.) Fiori (Balvanth Singh Thakur, p. 367-368), while others consider Kantaka (Asima et al; Vol. II p. 144-145).
Botanical Description – It is perennial herb with greenish yellow coloured flowers. It is found in the tem-porate regions of India.
Major Chemical Constituents– Fruits contain protein and sucr-ose; bark yields tannin and flacourtin, a phenolic glucoside ester.
