Caraka mentioned it under groups. Thakurji reported two varieties of Tila viz., Sveta (white) and Krishna (black). These may be dehusked or husked varieties. Dr. Nisteswar quoted that there are three varieties of Tila viz., white, red and black. The black variety is considered to be the best.
Botanical Description – – It is an annual herb growing upto 1 m bearing white or light pink coloured flowers. It is mainly cultivated in the temperate regions of India.
Major Chemical Constituents– Neutral lipids, glycolipids & sesamose, sesamolin, sesamolinol, sesamol, pinoresinol etc.
Part Used– Seeds, oil.
Dosage– Powder 5-10 gm
Research–
(1) Sesamolinol and sesaminol showed antioxidant activity (ACS Symp. Ser. 1994, 547, 264).
(2) Sesamolinol exhibited stronger antioxidant activity than vit E in vitro microsome assay. (Agric. Biol. Chem. 1985) 49, 3351).
